Cure Violence - Violence Interrupter

Position Overview:

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, the leading champion of empowerment and opportunity for African Americans and others throughout the region in securing economic self-reliance, social equality, and civil rights, is seeking a highly motivated individual with a desire for helping others to implement the Cure Violence initiative, a coordinated strategy to address violence within the Walnut Park neighborhood. The Violence Interrupter will support initiatives by providing conflict mediation services.

Violence Interrupters work by:

  • Gaining information on potential conflicts in Cure Violence communities
  • Formulating action plans to help resolve conflicts
  • Attending weekly mediation meetings
  • Meeting with high-risk individuals and groups on a daily basis to discuss issues
  • Working to prevent initial acts of violence
  • Helping in the efforts to prevent all potential retaliatory shootings
  • Developing relationships with influential individuals and groups in the community
  • Referring potential clients/participants to outreach workers
  • Documenting conflicts resolved on conflict mediation forms (provided by Cure Violence)
  • Keeping daily log documenting all contacts with high-risk individuals daily
  • Participating in all required training
  • Attending community responses as needed

Administrative Duties:

  • Violence Interrupters are expected to work 40 hours per week (as reflected in budget)
  • Violence Interrupters are required to submit all paperwork on a weekly basis at weekly scheduled meetings

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with at-risk youth and gang members
  • Must be a credible/suitable and respected individual in the target area.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience or training in crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of target area
  • Valid Missouri driver's license, insurance, and good driving record
  • No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for domestic violence (within 10 years) or prior convictions for sexual assault or child abuse.
