Custodian - Head Start/Early Head Start

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is seeking a qualified individual to work as a custodian. This position is responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep of the Urban League Head Start/Early Head Start Centers, grounds, and equipment.   Work may involve a variety of physical demands. This position is split between two separate South City buildings.

Duties are described in major areas in order of importance, and after each major area, the approximate percentage of time working on various components of the job is estimated.

• Ensures that agency facilities have adequate heating, lighting, and ventilation, and that they are properly cleaned each workday.
• Cleans, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors. Cleans windows, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and interior and exterior stairwells, walkways, and parking lots.
• Cleans facilities and keeps restrooms supplied with towels, soap, and other general restroom supplies.
• Collects and disposes of trash from building and grounds.
• Moves furniture and equipment.
• Determines material, equipment, and supplies to be used.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, and equipment; principles of sanitations and safety in janitorial work; proper use and care of mechanical cleaning equipment; principles of supervision; and employee selection and training

Ability to operate assigned equipment, including office computers; Ability to make minor repairs to building and equipment; Ability to keep routine records; Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties which includes lifting a minimum of 40 pounds, walking, standing for extended periods of time. Candidates must possess a valid State Driver's License.

The above knowledge and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience and some experience performing basic custodial and maintenance duties. A physical exam, clear tuberculosis screen, Hepatitis A vaccination and background check are required for all Maintenance Staff assigned to a Head Start Center prior to hire.
