The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is seeking a qualified individual to work as a Family Service Worker (FSW) in the Head Start/Early Head Start program. The FSW is responsible for the recruitment and enrollment of children eligible for Head Start/Early Head Start services, providing social services to Head Start/Early Head Start families, and carrying out the program's case management activities including the completion of the child health requirements. The position supports the larger system of services provided by Head Start/Early Head Start, thereby supporting the goals of the program.

In addition to recruiting/enrolling prospective families, the FSW enters and completes all documentation required for the enrollment process in program's database and files. The FSW distributes literature in identified neighborhoods/events with the intent of recruiting families for enrollment while maintaining a full caseload of children, as determined by supervisor, as of the first day of the start of program services and maintains an ongoing waiting list to ensure vacancies are filled within 30 days as they occur.

Additionally, the FSW conducts a minimum of two (2) home visits per family to facilitate family plans, assists families in achieving identified goals and follow-up on referrals. Acts as a case manager, works cooperatively with local agencies to assist families to find services in the local community, makes a minimum of 10 contacts per week with assigned families (contacts entire caseload at least once a month), documents contacts in database/file, and other duties as assigned.

Qualified individuals must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of social work and human behavior. Knowledge of human development and health. Knowledge of the social/health services available in the area. Knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to child abuse and neglect. Ability to know and implement the Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards.

The above knowledge and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience. A bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related Human Service field and one year's experience working with disadvantaged and low-income families is required. Must be willing to obtain the Red Cross First Aid Certification and CPR coursework and updates as required. A health exam and clear tuberculosis screen are required for hire.

Current and former Head Start/Early Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.
