The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is currently seeking a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) Specialist to support the Head Start/Early Head Start program.

Under general supervision, the Assistant Director of Education Operations and in coordination with the program Education Coordinators, the STEAM Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, modeling, and supervising STEAM program activities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and maintain a STEAM curriculum and work plan using program School Readiness Plan.
  • Responsible for supporting teachers with Early Childhood STEAM activities to include curriculum development, content area lesson planning, and developing STEAM learning activities and hands-on materials for classes.
  • Uses prescribed educational outcome measures to provide guidance and direction for children to achieve goals STEAM and overall program goals.
  • Adopt a data-driven attitude towards measuring learner progress.
  • Visit classrooms to observe, monitor, and model STEAM lessons.
  • Create and implement lessons and activities for the mobile investigation stations for children and community staff. Assistant teachers with navigating the stations with children.
  • Attends and provide professional development and training related to STEAM programs and methodologies, staying abreast of current research.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and children learning.
  • Uses technology to promote learning, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Works directly with education coordinators and staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of STEAM initiatives and curriculum.
  • Implements STEAM related educational lesson plans and daily programs for children in accordance with each child's need and performance standards.
  • Screens, observes, and documents children as required.
  • Maintains filing, tracking and documentation systems to comply with local, state, and federal regulations, monitors compliance with the HS/EHS Work Plan, and the ACF Performance Standards in the area of Child Development.
  • Submits monthly progress reports to supervisor as scheduled.
  • Involve parents in the educational STEAM activities of the program: To emphasize their role as the principal influence on the child's education and development and to assist parents to increase their knowledge, understanding, skills and experience in basic child development in the area of STEAM.
  • Assist with STEAM program recruitment of children and families.

The above knowledge and abilities are typically acquired through a through a combination of education and experience equivalent to an Early Childhood Development or Degree in Education or STEM certification.

Candidates must have:

  • A bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development is required, or a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with STEM/STEAM Certification is preferred.
  • Three years teaching preschool, elementary, or other education area.
  • Three years of experience in an administrative function with direct supervisory responsibilities is preferred.
  • Must successfully obtain the Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification and updates as required.
  • Experience in working with disadvantaged and low-income families is desirable.
  • A physical exam, clear tuberculosis screen, Hepatitis A vaccination and background check are required.
